The European Union plans to launch an investigation into WhatsApp’s AI features, according to the Financial Times.
The investigation will reportedly focus on how the American social media company Meta Platforms integrated its Meta AI system into the messaging service this year.
It is unclear exactly which aspect of the integration of AI functions the European Commission is targeting. The investigation, which may be announced in the coming days, falls under traditional competition law and not the new Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The EU introduced the DMA to address the dominance of large online platforms.
The European Union has significantly increased pressure on major American tech companies in recent years in an attempt to prevent abuse of power. US President Donald Trump has strongly criticised the European rules, arguing that they are primarily intended to hinder American companies.
