Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has described the situation in the Middle East as a failure of the international order. He made this statement during a visit to the Lowy Institute in Sydney.
“Despite decades of UN Security Council resolutions, work by the International Atomic Energy Agency, and a succession of sanctions and diplomatic efforts, the current conflict is yet another example of the failure of the international order.”
According to Carney, it is not his place to assess the situation further, although he does call for de-escalation.
Carney was a fierce critic of the US during the World Economic Forum in Davos. He stated there, among other things, that the global order is shifting, a point he reiterated on Wednesday in Sydney. “The old norms of the rules-based international order are being erased.”
This criticism in Davos led to the withdrawal of US President Donald Trump’s invitation to his so-called Peace Council.
