Hackers Steal $2.2 Billion Worth of Crypto in First Half of Year

Hackers stole more than $2.2 billion worth of cryptocurrencies in the first half of 2025, market analysis firm Finbold reported, citing data from crypto security firm SlowMist.

The bulk of the loot comes from the massive hack of Dubai-based crypto exchange Bybit in the first quarter of this year, in which $1.5 billion was stolen.

Despite the heavy losses in the first quarter, the second quarter of 2025 saw a noticeable drop in hacks. A total of $465 million worth of digital coins were stolen in the past quarter.

Experts suggest that this drop could indicate better security measures on the part of crypto exchanges.

“While the dramatic decline in Q2 is encouraging, we are still seeing billions drained from the crypto system,” says Finbold market analyst Jordan Major. “The Bybit hack alone accounted for nearly two-thirds of total losses in the first half of the year.

These are systemic risks that continue to undermine investor confidence,” he warns.
