The number of British troops stationed in Norway is to be doubled. Within three years, the number should be increased from 1,000 to 2,000, Defence Secretary John Healey announced this Wednesday.
Norway borders Russia to the north. The country is taking a Russian invasion into account, Army Chief Eirik Kristoffersen said Tuesday.
Russia could seek a larger buffer for the crucial part of its nuclear force near the Norwegian border. Moreover, Norway lies on the Russian navy’s shipping lanes to the open sea.
In addition to the reinforcements for Norway, the United Kingdom will also be “an essential part” of the NATO mission to protect the Arctic, Healey said. NATO is expected to present the Arctic Sentry mission on Wednesday afternoon.
The mission would include patrols and military exercises in Greenland and the Arctic. Exercises involving Northern European countries will also follow in September.
