Talks Between Russia, Ukraine and the US: Much Work Remains to be Done

The talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the US last weekend proceeded “in a constructive spirit,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reported. “But there is still much work to be done.”

Negotiators met in the United Arab Emirates to discuss an agreement to end the fighting in Ukraine.

It was the first time negotiators from Moscow and Kyiv met to discuss the American peace plan. “I wouldn’t say there was a friendly atmosphere. That’s hardly possible at this stage,” Peskov said. “But if you want to achieve something through negotiations, you have to communicate constructively.”

According to Peskov, the “territorial issue” remains fundamental for Russia. The country wants control over the entire Donbas region. Kyiv reiterates its position that it will not cede any territory that Russia has not captured.

According to a US official, the talks will resume on February 1.
